Second Look Stories

My Client is a single homeowner who owns a condo in Myrtle Beach, SC.  In the past he has itemized and filled Schedule E for the Condo rental property.  He uses it sparingly, usually less than 5 days per year.  He asked about depreciation which I put on his 2008 return so I gave him a thorough explanation on it.  He asked why his refund was so much higher than last year so I pointed out the effect of the depreciation on his rental income and the state tax withholding which was left off of last years return.  Needless to say he was pleased with the extra $900.00 refund and offered no objection to a 2nd look at his previous returns.

I immediately amended the 2007 return that he had with him gaining an additional $895.00.  He dropped off the 2005 and 2006 returns later.  They provided an additional refund of $1480.00 and $1260.00 respectively. The Three second looks amounted to $3635.00 plus the extra $900.00 or so for the current year.  My client had no objection to making the appointment for next year.

Second Look Story - Whiting, NJ Office

A police officer from the New Egypt area came in after seeing the flyers and coupons I left in one of the stores on Main Street. He was hurt in the line of fire for most of last year. A large majority of his income should not have been taxed by either federal or NJ (pay from being injured in the line of fire). However, his HR dept messed up and taxed the whole thing on him! Although he originally did his own taxes and got back about $5000 from 08 and $3000 from 06, he was owed more money from both federal and NJ. Hugh worked on his 08 while I worked on his 06. When everything was said and done, he's getting back about $10,000 from both federal and NJ!

He will be sending in his fellow police officers for us to take a look on their taxes (about 7 people he said)!
